The swing in emotions this week has been draining. Feelings of hope only to be shut out by self-protection. Moments of joy, only to be squashed by terrible news of a terminally ill neighbor. Sunshine galore, but my allergies have sent me into a spin of sinus pressure, dripping, sore throat and coughing …. and yeah the election. Waiting … waiting … waiting to see if we can, yet find ONE thing to breathe a bit easier about.

But while the waiting is hard, and watching COVID just EXPLODE and trend upward (even here in DC, we’re looking BAD), we MUST continue to focus on the tiny moments of love, joy, and happiness when we can find them. Let’s go.

From the photographer: The inspiration for the shoot came from the transition in seasons from Summer to Fall. The changing leaves and moody weather helped shape a rich color palette with rust orange, sage green, mauve, cream, and hints of brown and gold. When planner, Courtney-Rose Dantus of Dantus & Co. Events, initially approached me about the shoot, we both agreed that it was important to us as Black wedding creatives to feature a Black couple in the shoot. Representation matters and celebrating Black love and joy felt particularly meaningful to us during a time marked by increased calls for racial justice and equity.

All vendors were encouraged to bring their own creative spin to the shoot. Beyonka Designs’ impressive free-standing floral designs featured stalks of pampas grass, cattails, and an array of roses. The bride’s off-shoulder dress, with geometric cutouts, and the groom’s golden tux jacket, offered a striking balance of bohemian and luxe vibes. Because many couples don’t want to limit themselves to just one look, we finished up the shoot with the bride in a one-shoulder jumpsuit and fedora with lots of boho flair.

The shoot took place at Main Street Ballroom, a historic building with striking original stone walls and modern industrial finishes with a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. Something Vintage provided rentals that seamlessly tied together with the ceremony and receptions spaces. A gorgeous farm table served as the base for the sweetheart table design. A rust cloth table runner was complimented by gold candlestick holders, amber bud vases and natural elements like figs. Other elements, like a raffia place mat, organically shaped dinner plates, and modern flatware rounded out the design. The couple lounged in his and hers peacock chairs and the ceremony space featured specialty copper chairs.
