“Our Bluemont wedding was organic in the sense that every detail represented Tucker and myself, our relationship, our family, our friends, our happiness, and our love.”

Well come on guys – you have to know by this point that these are the weddings I LIVE for. The personalized, handmade weddings that couples took the time to pour themselves into (no matter what the result, number of details, color scheme, themed, etc – you get the point!). Funny story about this one though, turns out I went to high school with the groom! When the bride, Alexa & I were emailing about their wedding day details, she mentioned the name of the friend that introduced them. Funnily enough I went to HS with a girl by the same name …. turns out, it was the SAME girl! We live in SUCH a small world.

But anyway, Tucker & Alexa’s Virginia wedding is gorgeous. Gorgeous in SO many ways. The beautiful (handmade) flower crown atop the bride’s head, the fall wedding details, the outdoor ceremony at Bluemont Vineyard, the completely completely personalized wedding ceremony, bridesmaids in rainboots (!) … and SO much more! I know you guys are going to love Tucker & Alexa’s whimsical, Fall Virginia wedding as much as I do! A special thanks to Kristen Gardner Photography for sharing her images!

How they met:

We met about four and half years ago at James Madison University during my 5th year of school. My friend Katy came down to visit me from NJ and her friend Tucker decided to join her. We became friends instantly. I knew from the moment I first talked to him that I wanted to be with someone like him and after going to NJ a few months later for Katy’s birthday I discovered that it was him who I wanted. I am so lucky that he wanted me too! Our relationship was long distance for two and a half years and then Tucker finally moved down to Virginia.

Tucker proposed to me in August 2012. We were on a 10 day vacation visiting his friend Jake and hiking and camping in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Park. We are outdoorsy people so it was the perfect proposal even though Tucker forgot to open the box when he asked me.

We got married on October 13th, 2013 at Bluemont Vineyard. Our ceremony was beautiful. It had been raining all weekend and even though we had the option to have our wedding in the stable where our reception would be held I always hoped our wedding would be outside with the amazing view behind us. Tucker and I had visited Bluemont for the first time when it was pouring rain and decided it was perfect for us. We said if we loved it in the rain we would love it in the sun so we booked it right away. It was the first venue we looked at.

On our wedding day it rained all morning but by some act of God the rain let up just in time for the ceremony so we were able to have it outdoors.

Our ceremony reflected the importance of our families and our promise to each other. I walked in with both my parents to “Between Two Lungs” by Florence and the Machine. We wrote our own vows and kept them a secret until the big day. My cousin Amy read the opening poem by E.E. Cummings “I Carry Your Heart with Me” and our parents read “The Art of a Good Marriage”.

Because it had been raining all weekend I asked my bridesmaids to wear rain boots instead of the black high heels we had originally planned on. Seeing them (all 8 of them) stomping around in rubber boots made me feel more relaxed before walking down the aisle. I can’t explain why, maybe because it felt less formal.

I wore the hiking boots that I was wearing when Tucker proposed to me in Grand Tetons National Park under my wedding dress. I planned on switching into my “real” wedding shoes after the ceremony but never did. It felt right wearing those rugged boots under my beautiful gown.

There were a lot of DIY elements in our wedding. I put together the Programs and my Mom and I worked together to make the place cards. We used corks and lace to make the place cards for our women guests and the men got gourds and tiny pumpkins.

I love this note that Alexa shared about having her mom do their decorations and flower arrangements – a must read if you consider working with your parents on your wedding :)

My Mom did all the flowers and centerpieces for my wedding. She is the most incredible woman I know. I have to admit when we first started planning the wedding and she mentioned she wanted to do the flowers I felt a little apprehensive, not because I don’t think my Mom is talented- I was worried that giving her such a huge responsibility would put pressure on our relationship. What if I didn’t like her ideas? What if it was too much work and she couldn’t get it all together before the big day? I was afraid that something would happen that would take away from the experience of us planning for the wedding together. I can honestly say that having my Mother do all the decorations made my wedding feel more special than I ever could have imagined. It made the event so personal. The flowers were gorgeous – more beautiful than any arrangement I could have picked from a store.

She put doilies and knick knacks that were my grandmother’s and my great grandmother’s on each of the tables. I felt so proud to tell my guests that my Mother had put it all together and everyone was astounded by her work! She was beaming the whole day. To me her decorations represented my family and her love for me. I remember looking down at the empty tables while I was still getting ready and I could feel her love filling the room and shining up at me.

Our wedding cake and cupcakes were made by Evan Sanderson, owner of Sweets by E in Herndon, Virginia. Fun fact… Alexa and Evan used to carpool to highschool a million years ago.

The Best Man and Maid of Honor speeches were INCREDIBLE! Tucker’s brother Max had a hilarious yet touching speech. It was so sweet to look at our relationship from his outside perspective. My Maid of Honor Liz put together a rap while my 7 other bridesmaids were beat boxing behind her… it was INCREDIBLE! I had asked my best friends to be in my wedding party through a rap I had created using an iphone app. I was so happy to have one delivered back to me in front of all my guests!

Our first dance set the stage for the reception. We danced to “From Finner” by Of Monsters and Men. It was the perfect song to portray all the happiness we have in our lives.

In lieu of wedding favors we donated money to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

And then they got DOWN!
