I know not everyone is a fan of Valentine’s Day. It’s commercialized and not all that fun for those not in a relationship. But to me, I like the idea of a day spent celebrating and spreading LOVE, something we could certainly use a whole heck of a lot more of these days. Andy & I gave up the ‘special’ V-day dinner reservations and events years ago, and opt instead of an annual night of Pizza & Pie. This year we’ll be enjoying pizza from our local Brookland spot, Menomale, and getting two slices of pie from the one & only, Dangerously Delicious Pie.

For today we have some shots from a beautiful Valentine’s Day themed wedding styled shoot. I LOVE the donuts on the dessert spread and the idea of a dessert (or brunch wedding?) waffle bar! Also, can a bride PLEASE get this red dress to wear for her wedding and then hire me? Pretty please? Hope you guys all have a Happy Hump Day & Happy Valentines Day!

From the vendors:

Valentine’s Day is such a wonderful time to get married. There’s already extra cheer in the air and people just love to celebrate love. Inspired by enchanting elements that nature provides us this time of year – hearts and sweets – we used pink and red to tie the palette together. We used blush throughout to soften the look and bring in some unique inspiration. We also wanted to  keep things elegant and traditional. The venue’s amazing view  brought to life a romantic sweetheart table. To create a warm Valentine’s Day feel, we used hand-lettered signs, ready-made sparkling raspberry-accented cocktails, and a lovely mantle centerpiece for our sweetheart table.   A dessert bar fit for a Valentine’s Day party featured chocolate cover strawberries, donuts, heart shaped cookies, fresh fruit and a wedding cake adorned with pink and red roses.

Well the plague finally hit for me. Andy suffered for 2 weeks and I thought I was in the clear until I woke up Sunday morning with sinus pressure and a sore throat. Considering myself lucky that it’s not the flu, but hoping it doesn’t last as long as Andy’s sinus cold did. We spent most of the weekend watching the Olympics & trying to get house stuff done (thanks rain), but the cold kicked my butt on Sunday and I didn’t get NEARLY enough CapRo stuff done as I needed (story of my life). PS – If you’re still looking for Valentine’s Day gifts, don’t forget our #CapRoLove items hanging out in the Shop Made in DC!

But for today we have an AWESOME scrabble-themed wedding at the AVAM in Baltimore. It’s really hard to beat this venue you guys – I mean where else can you get married amongst an elephant and hot air balloon? It’s just the COOLEST. So many personalized details in this real Maryland wedding too! Let’s do it.

The two met in Chicago and dated there for several years. When the weather got too cold and Liz started grad school, they moved to Washington D.C. and have been here since! Adam’s proposal followed in the spirit of the Yalowitz/Granat love for Scrabble and the Londons’ far too competitive passion for Boggle. This theme would continue in the wedding decor.

“We were looking for a unique venue that was a little different than the standard fare and we were blown away by AVAM (American Visionary Art Museum). It was eclectic and offbeat and funky – and it was big enough for our guest list – so it was the perfect pick. We loved the idea that we’d be getting married in front of a “LOVE” hot air balloon, a pink poodle, and a bra ball.

We had a Jewish ceremony but adapted it to make it more egalitarian – for instance, we both broke a glass at the end! We used a family keepsake, a handmade quilt, as the cover of the chuppah, and added our own additions and edits to the Ketubah, the traditional marriage document, so it better reflected our partnership and values. We didn’t have bridesmaids or a grooms party but, instead, found meaningful ways to include loved ones in the ceremony. Some friends and family read prayers, some held the chuppah, some recited a poem, things like that. It was so incredible to have those people included in substantial roles. Another thing I loved was a Jewish custom called schtick, done during the reception, where people wear costumes, do dances, act goofy – whatever will make the couple laugh. Ours included a friend becoming a human limbo pole, some personalized flyers that were printed, and a can-can line. It was awesome.

Because there was so much incredible art, we didn’t need to do much for decor but we did have a few special DIY elements. We are both word game fanatics, as are our families. In fact, the proposal was on a Boggle board where you could spell the words: “Will you marry me” and “Yes” or “No.” Our escort cards and programs, designed by a good friend with a background in graphic design, had Boggle letters on them. For the table number signs, we got used Scrabble boards, cut them into quarters, and super glued tiles to spell out “Table One,” “Table Two,” etc. It was a really fun detail.

One of my other favorite details was what we did in lieu of traditional gifts for the guests. Everyone had a wooden token taped to their escort card. At the front table at the reception, we had jars with the names of three of our favorite organizations – one focused on the environment, one on immigration justice, and one on affordable housing. Guests were invited to drop their token in the jar of their choosing and then we donated to each place in their honor, according to how many tokens were collected. It was a way to honor our commitment to social justice in our work and personal lives while also letting the guests choose what issue they wanted to support.

While we didn’t spend too much on flowers, decor, or lighting, we definitely splurged when it came to food. We didn’t want the wedding to have a stiff, buttoned up vibe so we went for food stations: one was a fajita bar; one had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and greens; one was Mediterranean focused with kebabs, hummus, baba ganoush, etc.; and then we had a pasta bar. And that was just the main courses! The food was insanely good. We had great drinks as well, including several cases of beer donated from one of our friends who owns a brewing company.

I‘ve been a bad blogger this week. I know, I know. The day job has been crazy, and I’ve been sleeping kind of crappy, and there just feels like 100 other things going on. Today’s real wedding makes up for the lack of posts though – because let me tell you, it is GORGEOUS. Like, knock your socks off beautiful. Stunning winter details, jealousy inducing florals, the most beautiful brides, and so many personalized details. You are going to LOVE this one.

We wanted everything to feel personalized, to feel like fall, and Baltimore, and love!

When the guests arrived at the hotel they were greeted with Pumpkin jam from my hometown of Culpeper, VA. We homebrewed pumpkin beer for the wedding favors and had labels made featuring the name, “Date Me, Pumpkin,” which was a play on the (perhaps absurd) amount of times I asked Meagan to go on a date with me before she finally agreed.

The Chuppah we were married under was built by Meagan’s dad. Instead of the more traditional tallit covering, we chose to use a white shawl from Meagan’s mom, Dawn. Dawn passed away unexpectedly in July of 2016. She helped Meagan design my engagement ring and she brought us champagne and plastic flutes on the first night we moved into our new house. She was just so excited for the wedding planning to begin and an incredible person, so it was important for us to have her incorporated into our special day. Beyond the covering, we hung her bracelet on the bamboo corner of the chuppah and left an empty chair in the first row in her honor.

The venue is stunning… weathered stone, exposed brick, ceiling to floor windows, truly gorgeous. We wanted to keep it fairly simple and just add a few components to further emphasize the existing beauty. We draped café lighting from wall to wall and placed peach up-lighting in the corners of the dance floor. Our florist, West Virjeni took it from there and our incredible photographer, Sweet Caroline was able to capture it so wonderfully.

We gave Jeni, very little guidance beyond our venue name and budget, but my gosh, she exceeded all expectations! We walked into a fall wonderland, a fairy tale. Barn tables dressed in greenery and gourds, apples and candles. She used an array of vases, offering a balanced and eclectic visual. Deep maroons, white blooms, pops of everything autumn. Stunning.

We skipped the traditional guestbook and replaced it with a typewriter. Table letters, instead of numbers. We found rustic green shutters at an antique market and had Meagan’s dad put stands on them to create a more defined entry for the walkway. Instead of vows, we dug out seven years of love notes and shared some of our favorite lines. And to top it off, I surprised Meagan with the Oriole Bird! She’s been a diehard fan her whole life.

Oh Romancers, I am SO behind on SO many things, trying to get everything ready for our Shop Made in DC debut, getting some promotions together for February, all and everything email marketing, and let’s not even talk about the 2 mountains of laundry currently growing in our house (1 clean, 1 dirty). So please excuse today’s real wedding blog feature for being so late! And now, less from me, and more from an awesome winter DC wedding.

Daniella and Kevin’s wedding at StFrancis Hall was a fantastic mix of super laid back and classy. On this wintery day, the idea of hot chocolate and marshmallows echoed throughout the day – the perfect compliment to their fun donut bar, complete with a huge donut for the “cake” cutting. Fun details like this peppered throughout their traditional wedding made for a day that was perfectly fitting for this sweet couple.

StFrancis Hall is located in the quiet Brookland neighborhood of northeast Washington, DC. The venue makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time – and away from the city!

The colors for our wedding were Navy & Gold. We choose those colors because we wanted a timeless and classic feel to our wedding, so we picked colors that are always in style.

In regards to choice in venue, we picked StFrancis because of their beautiful gardens and architecture. We knew we would be getting married in the winter but having beautiful photos was very important to us, so we wanted to make sure that our venue would be able to provide the perfect backdrop. The exposed brick walls inside their banquet hall also played in to the classic feel we wanted without being too modern.

For our ceremony we actually had a friend play our favorite song as a couple on acoustic guitar for our processional and recessional music instead of a prerecorded song. For DIY details, my husband designed the graphic for our seating chart, and all of the flowers and bouquets were done by me and my bridesmaids. Instead of a guestbook, we had our family and friends leave us movie recommendations for a future date night.
