And now for something completely different … a bride in a stunning black gown and her bridesmaids in white! We love to keep you guys on your toes here at Capitol Romance, trying to keep our features as varied and possible to show the REAL side of DC weddings for the majority of us that live in and around the metro area. Such is the case with Jadene and Freddy – married at Rosemont Manor in Virginia and completely turning tradition on its head. Photographer, Andrew Morrell shares, “Jadene wore a shimmering black dress, contrasted by her three bridesmaids, all in white. This devilish switch-up was the cornerstone of the day’s bewitching charm – the groom’s ironic top hat, the traditional and the playfully clear skies all made this a day to remember.

So many fun details from the bride!

I had so much fun planning our wedding!  Everything started with the dress, I wanted black and I wanted my husband in a top hat.  I purchased my dress from Curvy Girl Bridal, which I am sad to say has gone out of business.  They were truly the only dress shop that I went to that was excited that I wanted a black dress.  I love damask print so that is why I tied in white but I still felt that something was missing.  The problem with black and white in the fall every color either looks like Halloween or Thanksgiving.

I was wandering Michaels looking for ideas and I saw this wreath made out of peacock feathers and I starting thinking…I could not only add a peacock blue/teal but a peacock feather element as well…I felt that the feathers softened the hardness of the black and damask print. We didn’t want our wedding to be about “what you are suppose to do.”  As I was talking to my husband about the damask and feather idea, he started laughing and said it was perfect because the damask reminded him of his personality and the peacock feather of mine.  Totally different but somehow work together.

Love Jadene’s origami flower bouquet!~

I had to have makeup that stood up to the black birdcage veil I was wearing and added color to my bridesmaids white dresses.  So we had more of a vintage/pinup make up done.  My girls with a bright red lip and heavy liner.  For their hair I found peacock feather flowers.  They were made to be Christmas tree decorations but I turned them into hair clips.  As for my makeup  we went more for the eyes.  Heavy lashes and more of a smokey shadow.   A lot darker then most would do for wedding makeup.  The makeup artist was recommended by Rosemont (KLH) and I’m glad they did.  She understood what I was looking for outgoing and non traditional yet classy and sophisticated.  I was scared at the trial that I was going to end up looked to Vampy or Gothic but she did neither.  As for my hair I went with pin curls to add that touch of vintage to it.  When hair and make up were done I could not believe how pretty I looked.

As for the white bridesmaid dressed, I had to add something to them besides make up and feathers.   The dresses had this lace detail that I fell in love with, so I added black lace gloves and black heels to off set the white.

The Historic Rosemont Manor in Berryville ended up being our venue.   I loved the old house, the trees, how private it was.  we wanted an outdoor ceremony and it is just beautiful there.  Then after meeting Michael, their wedding coordinator, I knew this was where we should be.  Michael was so detailed and patient.  Rosemont is a Bed and Breakfast as well, and I loved that fact that they had a wedding package that included rooms.  We were able to make a whole night of it.  Not only that but they really gave you enough time to set up.  The whole staff was all about making your day truly your day.  Everything ran so smoothly, all I had to do was enjoy myself.

We really wanted our good friend to perform our ceremony but were having a hard time getting through VA red tape.  After talking to Rosemont, they said that there was no need to go through all that.  We were able to have our friend perform our ceremony and after that was done the officiant at Rosemont performed a 2nd ceremony with our family and wedding party that made it official.  They really wanted to make everything happen that we wanted to happen.  We choose the portico instead of the yard because it felt more intimate.

As for handmade:  I didn’t want real flowers.  It makes me sad when they die, and I didn’t want to look and a dead bouquet to remember my wedding.  So my bridesmaids carried a bouquet of peacock feathers and because of that is why I put them in white.  Plus I liked the idea of the bride wearing black and the bridesmaids in white.  Mostly I liked the way the feathers popped.  My bouquet was origami flowers, which I now have worked into my decor at home.  I used mostly black and white patterned card stock, threw in a few of the teal color.  Then found different broaches and pins for the center of the flowers.  I looked up online on how to fold the petals tried a few different flowers but ended up with the 5 petal flower. My sister and I made the boutonnieres too.

I wanted candles but wanted something different, so I took an old iron coat rack and clear glass orbs, hung the orbs from different length fishing line and put votive candle in the orbs.

As for the reception decor I used black candelabras with white tapers.  I also used damask pillars and feathers.  We had lots of candles to give that soft glow.  We had very large paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling which made the candelabras look less Gothic.

The lanterns also picked up the lights that the DJ used as well.  Our DJ made the party.  I was already in love with the reception area but when he added the up lighting and his touches it made it perfect.   We used DJ Urban Cowboy, he kept the whole night flowing.  I picked ceremony music that no DJ would have on file.  He did not question my choice just found it.  He really took the time to get to know our music likes and dislikes.  He made the night really fun!

We did a small little cake that was just for the two of us.  Lets be real most people do not really care about the cake they care more about the open bar.  We had a snack bar for our guest,  popcorn, white cheddar,  candy, black, white and teal, Oreos.

As for the invites I got the basic foundation from a kit at Michaels then did the rest myself.  At every seat I made thank you notes.  took plan white card stock found a thank you stamp that I liked.  Stamped then embossed added and edging detail.  We did this instead of favors.  I wanted to say a simple thank you.
