One of the things I love about the submissions I get is the awesome variety. Some days I’ll get super DIY focused weddings, with a ton of handmade details and other days I’ll get ones like this DC wedding from Love by Serena. A super intimate, Washington DC courthouse wedding. This real DC wedding features just two beautiful women, their love for each other, a commitment, and some gorgeous images of their wedding day.
Much to the contrary of other wedding blogs, I love to share weddings that don’t have a ton of ‘details’ – namely because to me, details really aren’t at all what weddings should be about. They really are about a couple’s love at their core and how that couple chooses to express their love. So details or not, what I really want are kickass couples with beautiful love stories. And that is exactly what Joelle & Kimberly are bringing today!
Joelle & Kimberly’s Intimate, Washington DC Courthouse Wedding
How they met:
Joelle and I met our sophomore year of college and started dating the summer before senior year. After graduation, we took a year off together before going to graduate school at Syracuse University. I started working on teaching degrees, and Joelle began a clinical doctorate program in audiology.
When I graduated, I accepted a job in South Carolina, which meant we spent one long school year apart. When Joelle decided to complete her residency in Florida, we were happy to be moving back to each other!
On their proposal & wedding plans:
The big move, new jobs, and living together again made us feel like it was the right time to get married. We talked about eloping, and Joelle proposed on a visit to South Carolina with two wedding bands. Elopement was quickly nixed by our families, who wanted to be there when we said our vows, so we decided on a small courthouse wedding.
DC is close to both of our families, and we wanted to be married in a state that recognized our marriage fully. Joelle’s mother works for a wonderful judge, and he agreed to marry us in his courtroom. We had just our families in attendance (and the Judge’s staff!), and it was simple, heartfelt, and special.
We had pictures taken across the street in the National Gallery of Art, and celebrated with family over dinner. It turned out to be a perfect day, and we are thrilled to be married!
